Remembering the King
Thousands of people are lining up to walk through the Memphis home of The King
30,000 people are expected to converge on Memphis this weekend to mark the anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley. He died on August 16th, 1977.

Tucson has a unique connection to Elvis. On June 1st, 1976 the King brought his show right here to the Old Pueblo. After Elvis asked the audience "What do you want to hear?" someone suggested "Danny Boy."

After an unsure beginning, Elvis performed a soulful rendition of one of his best loved songs.

It was the final time Elvis sang the song before his death.

Bryn Terfel sings duet with Ronan Keating
BRYN TERFEL sings a duet with Boyzone’s Ronan Keating on Bryn’s latest CD, to be launched in September.
The pair perform Danny Boy on the album which is called First Love: Songs from the British Isles.
Bryn, 42, revealed details of his collaboration with Keating as he spoke of his excitement at this year’s forthcoming Faenol Festival between August 22-25.

He will welcome re-formed Boyzone with Ronan, John Barrowman, I’d Do Anything winner Jodie Prenger, Cerys Matthews, Maffia Mr Huws and others to the stage on the site between Bangor and Caernarfon.

The CD is out two days after Bryn sings at the Last Night of the Proms on September 13 and the Pantglas bass baritone said: “I recorded Danny Boy with Ronan three weeks ago. Ronan was very positive and excited to be performing in North Wales, something that’s new for the band. So I hope Boyzone are a huge success.”

During his visit, keen golfer Bryn revealed Ronan has even asked to play a round in Harlech the day before the Faenol Festival – probably at the Royal St David’s Golf Club.

Bryn, speaking at a Press conference at the Seiont Manor Hotel, Llanrug, also wants a cross section of different styles and “something for everybody”.

He added: “It’s a strong year. What’s positive about this year is that we’ve had Wakestock selling 20,000 tickets which is amazing. I hope Gwyl Dolgellau (Sesiwn Fawr) will have exactly the same thing.”

NYC bar bans singing of 'Danny Boy'
The traditional ballad Danny Boy is not known for being controversial, but this St Patrick's day a New York bar has decided to ban it while a Michigan cafe will sing it 1000 times.
It is depressing, it is not usually sung in Ireland for St Patrick's Day, and its lyrics were written by an Englishman who never set foot on Irish soil.

Those are only some of the reasons why a Manhattan pub owner is banning the song 'Danny Boy' for the entire month of March.
The ban has been implemented by Shaun Clancy, who owns Foley's Pub and Restaurant, across the street from the Empire State Building.

The 38-year-old Mr Clancy, who started bartending when he was 12 years old at his father's pub in Co Cavan promised a free Guinness to patrons who sing any other traditional Irish song at the pub's pre-St Patrick's Day karaoke party on Tuesday.

But a bar owner in Michigan is taking a different approach. AJ O'Neill, who owns AJ's Cafe, is getting his patrons to perform 1000 renditions of 'Danny Boy'.

Mr O'Neill says it will take from three days to complete the task if each rendition were to last three minutes.

He has lined up some 600 participants so far including soloists, duos and choral groups.

The lyrics for 'Danny Boy,' published in 1913, were written by English lawyer Frederick Edward Weatherly, who never even visited Ireland, according to the book 'Danny Boy: The Legend of the Beloved Irish Ballad.'

'Danny Boy' was recorded by Bing Crosby in the 1940s, served as the theme song of television's 'Danny Thomas Show' from 1953 to 1964. It was also recorded by Frank Patterson for his album 'Ireland in Song'.

It has been performed by singers ranging from Judy Garland and Elvis Presley to Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson.
